Rain Water Harvesting

rainwater harveting diagramThe last twenty five years has seen the average adult consumption rise from approximately 80 litres a day to about 160 litres, this is mainly due to the rise in water consuming appliances i.e. dishwashers etc.  A lot more water is therefore needed to be recycled.

A simple way to collect water is through water harvesting.  It has been calculated that for every inch of water that falls on a 1000 square foot area it is possible to store 600 gallons of water.  Apparently 100,000 litres falls onto the average rooftop in Britain which if stored and then recycled could have an affective saving and be environmentally helpful

  • Garden watering
  • Irrigation
  • Vehicular washing
  • Cleaning of patios etc
  • Toilet flushing
  • Laundry washing

The idea is that by using rainwater you are taking away the demand for water from the mains-water authority and areas that have recently seen the water ban regulations in drought areas.  It can also work another way in that a large volume of water is being kept out of the storm-water management system helping to reduce flooding in certain areas.
If vast amounts of water can be collected and re-used in the house or office it is a legal requirement to separate the pipe work from the mains supply and it has to be identified as recycled water, this is to make sure that the mains water does not become contaminated.

Irrigation Services UK Limited would be happy to assist in this matter from the design, installation and planning consent.
